When a video game designer meets a woman who makes dance moves
A video game artist is now living life as a female, thanks to a woman in her 20s who has transformed her life and career.
Karen Lipscomb started out as a model, but quickly switched to dance after falling in love with dance and dance videos.
She became an instructor in a dance studio, then studied dance in the US and Japan and became a full-time instructor in 2010.
“I was a full time teacher and a full member of the dance community, but when I decided to become a professional dancer I realized I wanted to be a teacher and be a part of a dance community that wasn’t necessarily geared towards me,” she said.
“In my professional life I’ve been an instructor and a part-time dancer, so now I’m really looking forward to being a fulltime teacher.”
Ms Lipscoff’s journey to becoming a full and active dancer began at the age of 14.
Her mother encouraged her to go to dance school.
She went to the Dance Academy in her hometown of San Francisco, where she began to take classes at age 18.
“She said, ‘It’s important to you that you learn to dance so that you can do your own thing.
It’s not a job, it’s a passion and it’s something you’ve been working towards for a long time’,” she said, recalling the impact that dancing had on her life.
“When I was 14 years old I decided I wanted this.
I decided, ‘I want to learn to be able to be myself and I want to be happy and I wanted people to like me because I’m beautiful and I’m funny and I’ve got a big heart’.” Ms Linscomb’s life changed dramatically in the five years since she started dancing at the Dance Academies.
She moved to LA, became a dance instructor, started attending dance competitions and now has over 100 dance performances on her YouTube channel.
“Dance is my passion,” she says.
“It’s something that I have worked so hard to achieve.
I really feel that I’ve done it because of dance.”
After becoming a teacher, Ms Liescoff made a conscious decision to become an instructor because she was tired of being the only woman in a classroom and not being welcomed.
“At first I was so happy to be accepted because it’s so empowering, but as I grew older I started to feel like it was the wrong environment for me to be,” she explained.
“Because it’s the male-dominated environment that I grew up in I didn’t feel welcome, and it really upset me.”
“I wanted to change the culture so that it was a safe space for women to be themselves, so that’s when I became involved in the industry.”
Since becoming a professional, Ms Tinscoff has become a full partner and has worked with the likes of The Vulture, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.
Her videos have gone viral and have received more than 15 million views.
Ms Litscomb is proud of her accomplishments and her personal journey of overcoming her fears of becoming a woman.
“That’s what I’ve really struggled with, because my biggest fear is that I would lose my confidence and my ability to have that confidence and be able make that decision to make that change to become who I am,” she added.
“Being in a room with other people who are just as confident and who have the same struggles, it makes me feel really proud.”
She has also become involved in several other projects, including a music video for the track ‘You Can’t Stop Me’, starring Rihanna.
“Music has always been a part a part part of me.
Being able to make music and have my voice heard has been an amazing feeling.
I love working with people, so I really think that’s why I’ve become successful,” she continued.
“People have always been so supportive and they’ve always been supportive of me, so it’s not just about me.”
